Woman discloses staggering cost of childbirth after receiving ‘horrendous’ medical bill
It’s well-known that healthcare costs in the United States are steep, but sometimes a case emerges that highlights just how exorbitant these expenses can be, especially for individuals without insurance.
Silicon Valley entrepreneur and mother of two, Marina Mogilko, took to Instagram earlier this year to recount her experience after giving birth to her second child.
Having already gone through childbirth once, Marina was familiar with the process and delayed heading to the hospital for a few hours after her labor began.
Upon her arrival, she and her husband discovered she was close to delivery, prompting immediate transfer to the delivery room where she gave birth 20 minutes later following a ‘super fast’ delivery.
Although doctors needed to perform stitches on Marina, the overall delivery was ‘smooth.’ The family was then accommodated in a room featuring a private bathroom, unlimited food, and a bed available for Marina’s husband to stay overnight.
With another child already at home, Marina and her husband opted to leave the hospital the next day, resulting in a single overnight stay.
They enjoyed two weeks as a newly expanded family of four until they received the medical bill for their hospital stay.
The news of Marina’s private room and unlimited food might hint at a higher charge, yet the actual bill surpassed expectations.
According to her Instagram post, the total amounted to $36,455.16 for just one night, a sum exceeding a year’s income for many individuals.
Fortunately, Marina’s insurance covered most of the bill, though she and her husband were still responsible for $2,201.29.
Many onlookers were appalled by the cost, with one commenting: “That’s actually a disgusting bill. I’m so sorry that you have to put up with that.”
Another remarked: “Theft in broad daylight.”
Readers from other countries expressed gratitude for their access to free or more affordable healthcare, while some suggested that Marina might have been better off opting for a home birth.
